I followed the tutorial, and configured 2 Ubuntu 18 VMs with frr OSPF + LDP + L2VPN VPLS.
What tutorial? The Linux kernel does not support VPLS. FRR supports it, but only on OpenBSD, and it's not regularly tested.
Is there a specific Linux setup necessary to enable the dataplane forwarding to work ?
Well, yes, the "setup" is that someone needs to implement it for the Linux kernel. I have done so previously in my free time as a side project (= proof of concept, incomplete), but noone is currently funding development or testing in this direction. Cheers, David
