I don't remember all the details from that code, but found this in an old email (from the dev list) from Renato around that time about the branch:

>From what I can see the change was never done, but might have to look into more details. But in short, that branch
is "not ideal" and needs work. Don't remember why this didn't happen, but I can try to find out (or maybe someone here remembers)
